My brain is melting.
FROM HAPPINESS.
I spent all day reading about Shakespeare, and lo, IT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME. The Shakespeare Wars is a brilliant, well-written, fascinating exploration of the controversies and debates that exist within Shakespearean scholarship. It's riveting. And stunningly eloquent and hysterical at different turns. I highly recommend it.
CHICAGO THIS SATURDAY! I am so nervous/excited. In a fit of uncharacteristic preparation, I have already picked out my clothes! (Which cardigan best says 'I am mature and responsible'? Which white t-shirt best proclaims 'I have a quick and agile mind'? Which pair of flannel pants screams 'I like fuzzy things!' the loudest?). I would say that I had packed said clothing, only I seem to have lost my only non-humongous suitcase.
Where did you go, little red duffel bag? I'MMA FIND YOU EVENTUALLY. You're only making things harder on yourself. *looks stern*
I had an unexpected Social Encounter last night! And it was lovely. Someone in my grad program who, for various reasons, wasn't asked to continue on next semester, decided to come back to TinyTown to stay with her boyfriend and figure out where to go next. Which makes me EXCEEDINGLY happy, as she was my favorite person in the entire program. I wanted her to play Mercutio so bad. I'm still a little bit heartbroken that I won't be able to work with her (goddamn casting regulations), but so relieved that she'll still be a part of my life.
Last night we hung out and watched Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. I love it unashamedly. And, right when we got to the death scene, as I was pleading with the DVD to skip, IT SKIPPED. Is v. creepy (did I suddenly develop telekineses? More research is in order...).
On a more serious note:
waltzmatildah is running a fundraiser on her LJ to raise money for relief efforts in Australia. The flooding there has been devastating and far-reaching, and fandom has a great history of being able to come together as a community when things like this happen to raise money for good charities.
The way this fundraiser works is that writers offer fics for the folks who offer to donate the most money to different charities (Queensland Government Flood Relief Appeal and the RSPCA Flood Appeal have been promoted all over the place as good places to donate).
I'm offering one fic for each of the two highest bidders. Here's the thread with all of my details. (Not, to, like, twist arms or anything, but keep in mind that I'm going to have a lot less time to write this semester, and that these two stories will definitely get written. So if there's anything you're dying to read, this is probably the best way to ensure that it'll get written before the summer!)
Here's a complete list of all the authors/fandoms on offer! If you have money, consider making a bid! If you're a writer, consider making an offer! If you have neither money nor the inclination to write, consider signal-boosting! If you don't want to do any of those things...you should eat a mango. They're delicious.
Also, I can't even tell you how much I hate html right now. That picture did not want to go to there.
