Whatever a Moon Has Always Meant
This Star Trek: Reboot fic is, quite simply, one of the most moving, beautiful, and heartbreaking pieces I have ever read. I can't even begin to think about the kind of skill necessary to write something like this - I was moved to tears about eight times, had goosebumps through pretty much the entire thing - and as soon as I post this I'm going to have myself a good cry.
hollycomb's written about insecurity and memory and family and loneliness in a way that transcends this story, and, honestly, is about the human experience. I recognized myself, my mother, my father - got hit in the chest with emotions I hadn't thought about in years - all perfectly entwined in a fascinating story, with perfectly realized characters.
Whether you are in this fandom or not, whether you're a Kirk/Sulu fan or not, you should read this. Set aside a few hours, download the pdf, and read it. It'll break your heart in the best possible way.

Date: 2010-07-30 03:17 am (UTC)I haven't actually read that much ST fic and I wasn't the biggest Sulu fan before I read this - but at this point I'm just planning on reading everything else she's ever written. It's going to be hard making myself wait until after the move, but if I don't, I'm going to end up doing what I did with this piece and read it all in one go!

Date: 2010-07-30 03:25 am (UTC)Walking After Midnight (this is a shorty! Just 6K with a lovely angsty Jim and a little bit of Kirk/McCoy)
Searching for the Ghost (epic Sulu/Chekov AU, one of the best fics I've ever read in any fandom)
Between the Bars (Sulu/Chekov established relationship angst, plus background Kirk/McCoy that absolutely kills me)
Under Control (aliens make Kirk and Chekov do it, then Sulu comforts Chekov later; I think the Kirk/Chekov scene is amazing; this one is also relatively short, at 11K)

Date: 2010-07-30 05:55 am (UTC)Seriously. OMFG. I can't wait to read more of her work - fan, original, whatever. After reading that story, I really am going to read everything else she writes/has written.
MY MIND HAS BEEN BLOWN.

Date: 2010-07-30 06:05 am (UTC)So very good, but yeah, it pretty much made me cry and sad, so
now I need to find something so fluffy and sweet that I'll get cavities.
Because yeah, right now I'm pretty much :(

Date: 2010-07-30 03:08 pm (UTC)I'm meant to be writing a long, arduous Kirk/Sulu thing for the big bang, but I am hideously behind on the word count, I can't even.
